After having lived for a summer in Arezzo (well, just outside the town center on a farm), I have always called these fastigiated conifers Tuscan Trees. I came away from Italy with a huge crush on them. David Stevens in his book, The Ultimate Garden Book For North America, calls the effect in the top photo exclamatory. He’s right. I was just driving down the street when the two exclamation points below got my attention.
