It starts in your kitchen. It is something that everyone can do, even in an all-white, super-modern, hyper-clean and stainless environment. It is also very addicting. Once you start, you'll never throw that banana peel in the trash can again. When your partner throws the husks of the silver queen corn in the rubbish, you'll find yourself digging them out for the sake of the compost. For those of you still squeamish about it, there are electric composters on the market with lids and charcoal filters and pathogen destroyers, etc. that don't use very much energy, even, and make your compost quickly. I, myself, have a big heap in the yard and I love it. I find it fascinating to watch develop. I like feeding it good food almost as much as I like feeding myself good food. The vitamins I put in the heap make me feel great, like going for a run with my pile. Like spinach stems for vitamin A and dead leaves for fiber and coffee grounds for a buzz. Just keep your pile a vegetarian. It doesn't have to be a Vegan...eggs shells are fine, too. Just don't give it any meat! Cooked food and animal products attract the little critters I hear complaints about.
